Become a Reviewer with A Thousand Words

Do you love theatre? Do you enjoy writing and sharing your opinions? Do free tickets to live performances spark your excitement?

We want to hear from you!

A Thousand Words is expanding and seeking expressions of interest from volunteers keen to write reviews on behalf of our platform. With only one reviewer at present, we can’t keep up with the demand—and that’s a wonderful problem to have. By growing our team, we’ll be able to cover more productions across Adelaide and South Australia, supporting theatre companies, schools, and youth groups with thoughtful feedback that celebrates their work and encourages future audiences.

What you’ll receive:

  • Two complimentary tickets to the production you’re reviewing
  • A complimentary program (when provided)
  • The chance to contribute to Adelaide’s theatre community and see more live performances

What we ask from you:

  • Volunteer role – reviewing is unpaid, with remuneration provided in the form of tickets/programs
  • Word count – reviews between 750–1,000 words (title not counted)
  • Spoiler-free writing – unless the review is published after the show’s season ends
  • Turnaround – reviews submitted within 12–18 hours. For example, you might draft the review on the night of the show, give it a “fresh eyes” edit in the morning, and submit it by midday the day following the performance. Occasionally, an immediate turnaround may be requested.
  • Independence – avoid letting friendships with artists influence your review. Any real or perceived conflicts of interest must be declared before you attend.
  • Flexibility – assignments will typically be offered for productions the founder is unable to attend. Most gigs will come with notice, though now and then a quick turnaround opportunity may come up.
