Lindsay Prodea’s A Friend of Dorothy: Anthems of Pride is a celebration of everything that makes one proud to be queer.

From Lindsay’s first line, “I am what I am,” from behind the curtain before stepping proudly into the spotlight and transitioning to Queen’s Don’t Stop Me Now, you know you’re in for a treat. The way he merges pride anthems together seamlessly catches you out every time he does it.

Lindsay takes you on a journey through queer history of the last 100 years with a focus on the music scene; how queer communities have claimed their anthems from allies and community members alike. From Cole Porter and Judy Garland, to Chappell Roan and Kylie Minogue, Lindsay weaves the story of the queer fight for existence and acceptance throughout the show. He shares anecdotes from the annals of history – from the US military holding an investigation to track down “Dorothy” and all of her queer gay friends, to the hilarious irony of the US Navy describing lesbians as “hard-working, career-oriented, and willing to put in the long hours.”

Lindsay’s voice soars with joy celebrating those that paved the way before. Changing his vocal quality and stage presence for each song, Lindsay maintains the energy and enthusiasm from first note to the last and drags the audience along for the joyous ride.

The 4 piece band that Lindsay shares the stage with are incredibly talented. And when being led by Peter Johns on keys, what else would you expect?! Jon Wilson on bass and Jack Barton on drums provide rock solid grooves as Lindsay leaps from musical to disco to ballad. Mykaela McQueen on guitar provides some stunning colour and counter melodies to the show (and was it a trick of the light or does her pink cowboy hat have a light-up brim?).

Lindsay’s producer and partner, Matthew Liersch, makes a couple of cameo appearances throughout to great effect and hilarity!

Celebrating queer anthems, Lindsay’s Friend of Dorothy is an eclectic mix of music that will have you itching for more and wishing you had joined in the singing earlier.
