Cyclops: A Satyr Play

When you enter the small performance space and have to carefully step over a passed out drunk satyr: the floor is strewn with empty bottles and cans, a karaoke machine, and a rather large and pink faux phallus. Our satyr and storyteller for the evening must have had one hell of a night before!

Performed by Griffin Hewitt with original music by Juliette Jones, Cyclops: A Satyr Play tells the story of Odysseus as told by Euripides in the only surviving example of aits king. Satyr Plays were comedic, vulgar parodies of existing serious stories and plays, much like the Panto tradition of the UK.

Blending original synth-heavy karaoke tracks, audience participation (your reviewer got to lend his voice to the cyclops and play some beer pong with the satyr) and Greek mythology, Cyclops is a brilliant rendition of this ancient comedic oddity. Griffin’s performance for our small audience was electric and fully committed, from the first hungover stagger to the final exit. The bawdy jokes all landed, as did the ones aimed at us mythology nerds. The audience participation is guided and supported, ensuring no one is left with regrets, a hangover, and no way to explain who drew that moustache on with sharpie.

Cyclops: A Satyr Play is what the Adelaide Fringe is all about. A man with goat legs, a karaoke machine, and the audience – eventually unanimously – deciding his ultimate fate.
