This isn’t comedy for the sake of being edgy; this is a deeply personal and vulnerable hour of standup that forces you to realise you might care more about a dog you’ve never met than the human being on stage.

The show explores his own reactions – or rather lack of reaction – to finding himself in an abusive relationship until he is reduced to pouring his heart out to his BOTOX technician. This isn’t a laugh-a-minute standup routine (it can’t be, given the subject matter) but Barr expertly takes the audience on a journey that destigmatises domestic violence and how people react to these impossible situations they find themselves in. He deftly confronts the audience’s own instinct to minimise his story in this very public setting – reminding us that it is okay to be not okay with what is happening.

Is Barr overly dramatic? His unnecessary smoke machine suggests yes. His well-delivered exploration of DV – and the ability to laugh through the impossible – says no.
