LOST IN TRANSLATION - 8 out of 10
Braw Media
TICKETS: Lost in Translation | Adelaide Fringe
Lost in Translation takes different classic film
scripts, runs them through an online translator a dozen times, and then read
the results live on stage in character! The final twist is that the guest stars
read the scripts on stage for the first time.
The latest victim to the online translator is Harry Potter
and the Chamber of Secrets! Harry Potter becomes Barry Crockery, Draco Malfoy
becomes Draco Milfoy, Dumbledore becomes Prime Minister, and Hogwarts becomes
Pigpimples! There is variation in some of the names provided by the online
translator throughout the script: Voldemort starts as goldilocks, but then becomes
Voldetort and Voldetortle in the final scenes; Goyle is mentioned once as
Gargoyle before becoming Google. If you’ve done the homework, it’s not an
issue.
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the longest movie
in the 8-film franchise, and still the team were able to condense it down to
just under 60 minutes without any of the necessary plot points missing. While
this initially seems like a marvel at first thought, the Lost in Translation
team have also done this with other REALLY long films such as the Lord of the
Rings franchise, so upon reflection, it becomes less of a marvel.
Sitting on a stool, Aaron Finan acts as the narrator and
keeps the flow of the hour at pace while regular of the team, and special
guests act out the scenes in their various assigned characters – complete with
recognisable voices! Gold star! The acting across the cast was infectious,
charismatic and enthusiastic, with all the actors improvising minimal actions
that caused large amounts of laughter from the crowd.
There is a lot of adult humour and innuendo, so perhaps don’t
bring the kids with you, but it’s the best laugh out loud hour I’ve experienced
in a long time. With 11 more movies in the catalogue to work through and close
proximity to Gluttony & the Garden, be sure to add this show to your Planner
if you still have space… I might even come back for another round!
