Oliver! at the Arts Theatre: A Bold Blend of Youth, Experience, and Community Vision
Marie Clark Musical Theatre (MCMT) are preparing to bring Lionel Bart’s beloved classic Oliver! to the Arts Theatre this June, and while audiences can expect all the familiar hallmarks of the iconic musical, this production, with a cast of nearly 50 performers, is more than a large-scale community production -it is a carefully constructed bridge between emerging young performers and established artists within the local theatre scene.
At its heart, Oliver! is a story about survival, belonging,
and finding one’s place in the world. Offstage, this production mirrors those
themes by creating a space where young performers can quite literally find
their footing alongside seasoned practitioners they have long admired.
Across Adelaide, youth theatre is already thriving with companies
such as Theatre Bugs, Adelaide Theatre Academy, Pelican Productions, NOW
Productions, Adelaide Youth Theatre, and Hills Youth Theatre continuing to
expand opportunities for young people, playing a vital role in nurturing
confidence, creativity, and foundational skills through junior productions and
training programs.
MCMT’s Oliver! is particularly noteworthy, affording these
young performers the opportunity to step beyond youth-only environments and
into the broader community theatre landscape. Here, they are not simply
participants in a youth production – they are sharing the stage with
experienced performers, some of whom are award nominees and recipients within
Adelaide’s theatre community.
Co-directors Lucy Trewin and Eloise Morriss, with Morriss
also serving as choreographer, alongside Musical Director Jaxon Joy, have been
instrumental in shaping this vision. Their approach balances ambition with
care, ensuring that the scale of the production does not come at the expense of
performer wellbeing or artistic clarity.
A standout feature of this production is its innovative
approach to the youth ensemble. Rather than placing many young performers on
stage simultaneously, MCMT have introduced two alternating youth ensemble casts
(dubbed the Bart and Dickens casts), reflecting both practical and artistic
considerations.
Alternating casts help prevent fatigue and burnout among the
younger performers managing rehearsals alongside school and other commitments. It
also allows a more focused and balanced ensemble presence, ensuring that each
performer has the space to contribute meaningfully without overcrowding the
stage.
Each youth cast will perform in four of the production’s eight performances, providing equal opportunity and exposure. Importantly, this structure allows performers in the titular role of Oliver Twist to share the stage with both ensembles across the season, enriching the collaborative experience and fostering a broader sense of ensemble cohesion.
The production is anchored by a strong lineup of adult performers bringing depth and experience to the principal roles. Adam Goodburn takes on the charismatic and complex Fagin, with Sarah Hamilton as Nancy and Brad Tucker as the formidable Bill Sikes. Their presence not only elevates the dramatic stakes of the production but also provides a professional benchmark for younger cast members to learn from.
Supporting roles are equally well cast, with Aliyah
Goodburn, Olivia Tod, and Felix Setchell stepping into the roles of Bet,
Charlotte, and Noah, respectively. This blend of emerging and established
talent reflects the production’s broader ethos: a community working
collectively to tell a story, while simultaneously investing in its own future.
This production arrives at a significant milestone for the
company, with Marie Clark Musical Theatre recently celebrating 50 years of contribution
to South Australia’s performing arts landscape—a remarkable legacy that
underscores its role as one of Adelaide’s most enduring community theatre
institutions.
Over the decades, MCMT has built a reputation for producing
high-quality musical theatre while fostering generations of performers,
creatives, and audiences. Many of Adelaide’s established theatre practitioners
trace part of their journey back to the opportunities and experiences provided
by the company. This longevity is not accidental, but the result of a sustained
commitment to artistic excellence, community engagement, and the nurturing of
emerging talent.
While Oliver! celebrates both heritage and emerging talent,
MCMT is looking toward its next major milestone: the Australian amateur
premiere of Finding Neverland.
Based on the story of J.M. Barrie and the creation of Peter
Pan, Finding Neverland is a contemporary musical that explores imagination,
storytelling, and the transformative power of theatre itself. Its inclusion in
MCMT’s upcoming season signals an exciting step forward, bringing a relatively
recent Broadway work to Adelaide audiences in an amateur premiere capacity.
The choice of Finding Neverland feels thematically aligned
with the company’s current direction, where it centres on youth, creativity,
and the ways in which theatre can shape and inspire lives. Presenting the
Australian amateur premiere reinforces MCMT’s position as a forward-thinking
organisation—one that not only honours its history but continues to seek new
opportunities and challenges within the evolving musical theatre landscape.
Together, these productions—one a beloved classic, the other
a modern theatrical work—illustrate the breadth of MCMT’s artistic vision and
its ongoing commitment to both tradition and innovation.
